Queering the Collection
The Van Abbemuseum is striving to become more and more inclusive in a range of different ways. Queering can be considered as one of these methods. It is often assumed that queering only involves the discussion of issues related to LGBTIQ+ issues and the study of homosexuality in art. Although this is a key pillar of the method, queering goes one step further. The particular focus of the process is on the perverse, the unexpected and the fluidity of identity, sexuality and politics. Queering sees sexuality as something fluid, rejecting the general categories and norms. The Van Abbemuseum wants Queering the Collection to help raise the profile of LGBTIQ heritage in art and provide tools for gathering knowledge and experimenting with it.
