How can museums provide systemic services for the deaf and hard of hearing?
Museums in Signs (Musea in Gebaren) is a joint initiative of FOAM and WatTelt! aimed at making the cultural sector more accessible to visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing.
FOAM and the deaf organisation WatTelt! want to use Museums in Sign Language to create a more accessible cultural programme and more employment for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The project is designed to create a permanent programme for the deaf and hard of hearing in their own language.
For a period of six weeks, participants are trained to become deaf museum guides which will help them become acquainted with the theory and practice of giving guided tours. They then get started as professional guides at one of the participating museums. Museums in Sign Language also works on adapting the museum lexicon and training interpreters.
There are 16 participating museums that regularly offer guided tours in sign language and are committed to the empowerment of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
Museums in Sign Language is sponsored by NSGK (the Netherlands Foundation for Disabled Children) and the Rehabilitation Fund.
