Maria Lassnig and body awareness

The Austrian artist Maria Lassnig is internationally regarded as one of the leading artists of the 20th century. She is, however, virtually unknown in the Netherlands. Her broad and diverse oeuvre encompasses paintings, drawings, films and sculptures. A major theme for Maria Lassnig was ‘Körperbewusstsein’ (Body Awareness), i.e. the relationship between your body and the world. Rather than depict what she sees, she illustrates the inner experience of her body.

What happens when you portray your own physicality? How did Maria Lassnig do this? How can the way you feel differ from the way the outside world sees you? How do you make sure you keep ownership of your own body, even when dealing with social exclusion? This and other questions form the basis of this afternoon.

Practical information

Drawing on their own expertise, speakers and performers Ashley Hans Scheirl, Emma Harjadi Herman, Sekai Makoni, Rachel Rumai and Mounir Samuel will comment on the concept of ‘Body Awareness’ from their own perspectives. Maria Lassnig’s work will be introduced by the exhibition’s curator Beatrice von Bormann.

#MYBODYISMINE

Mama Cash launched the #MyBodyisMine campaign, whose aim is to create new social norms for women and non-binary people and their bodies: norms based on pleasure, liberty and freedom of choice in the Post #MeToo era. Women and non-binary people are called upon to have a ‘My Body is Mine’ transfer applied and posting their story on Instagram. Alok Vaid-Menon’s video portrait, which was made for this campaign, will be shown during the programme. In the Audi Hall, prior to the plenary programme, visitors can have a transfer applied and get help with writing their own post.
